Arenas
Casa Almendros de Maroma is five minutes drive from the village of Arenas. Arenas is a Morisco village nestled between hills covered with almond trees, olive groves, vines and pine trees and is located at the foot of the Cerro de Bentomiz hill. Watched over by the Sierra de Tejeda and Almijara mountains, Arenas is an ideal place for hiking and other outdoor activities.
The village church still has its minaret from Moorish times and the ruins of the Castle of Bentomiz, which was one of the last to fall when the Christians drove the Moors from Andalucia. From the top of Cerro de Bentomiz hill, crowned by the castle ruins, you can take in the stunning surrounding landscape.
The village itself is a meandering maze of streets and retains the magic and atmosphere of old Spain. The residents are warm and friendly and ever ready to offer help or advice.
Arenas is part of the Mudejar Route around La Axarquía, awarded a Regional Tourism Award in Andalusia.
Facilities
Arenas offers a bank with cashpoint (Cajamar), a Coviran supermarket (near the church), a chemist, ironmongers, numerous small shops and a small local market on Wednesdays.
There are several cafes. Cafe Bar Alhambra is our favourite and serves great latte coffees, pizza and tapas.
There is also a bus service to and from Velez Malaga which operates on a daily basis.
